3d Printed cast could heal bones 40 per cent faster

Designed by Turkish industrial designer Deniz Karasahin says the Osteoid will “improve the general healing encounter for broken or fractured limbs by focusing on the patient’s relaxation along with the timeframe required for the entire body to cure itself.”

Mr Karasahin also says the Osteoid water resistant and is environmentally friendly as well as being lighter and more slender than conventional casts.

The 3d casts would be customised for each patient. In order to fit the limb perfectly the wounded area is scanned using a 3d body scanner. The subsequent data is transferred into a modelling program, where geometry and the total size of the cast is decided.
